As a club, Ilfsac has always dived deep and been at the frontier of new diving technology.
We
are aware that rebreathers are the future of diving and have organised
try dives with the Drager Dolphin and Buddy Inspiration. Both have
great merit and two of our club members bought Inspirations and did all
the training. Unfortunately our experiences as a club were not positive
- the rebreather divers did not integrate well and nobody else felt
inclined to follow their lead. Both of them are no longer members of
Ilfracombe & North Devon Sub Aqua Club.
In
2002, following the acceptance by the BSAC of external agency
qualifications for trimix diving, the club decided to form a Trimix
Group and for members to go on the IANTD Normoxic Trimix Course. The
group aims to integrate trimix diving into the mainstream of the the
club diving activities.
Initially 10 people joined the group and began training with Gary Fox of Dive Action Diving Services St Keverne.
It
rapidly became apparent that the candidates needed to re-equip and to
practice diving with the new equipment, so it was decided to spend the
summer of 2002 doing this and to try to complete the training by the
end of the season.
Circumstance
conspired to prevent completion of the course in 2002 but the
candidates achieved some fabulous deep practice dives off the North
Cornwall coast and are fully intending to complete the course early in
2003.
The BSAC SW Region now has a trimix co-ordinator - Chris Lobb and the Ilfsac group will be liasing with him as they progress.
