Anemones and Corals Workshop![]() Ilfracombe and Lundy 2nd- 4th June This three day workshop is intended for anybody interested in learning more about these fascinating and colourful animals, honing their anemone identification skills, resolving id problems, seeing some rare anemones and corals and contributing to our knowledge of some of the species. The first day (Friday) will be spent in Ilfracombe in the local sub-aqua club’s classroom looking at the structure and biology of anemones and corals, identification of the different groups and species found in the UK and conservation issues around different species. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own images for identification and discussion. Leading the workshop will be Chris Wood, author of the Seasearch Guide to Sea Anemones and Corals of Britain and Ireland, and whilst many of the images and material will come from the published book we will also look at some of the interesting sightings and updates of information it has already given rise to. Saturday and Sunday will be spent diving, weather permitting, around the Lundy Marine Nature Reserve where we hope to update information on the condition of the pink sea fan and sunset cup-coral populations and have the opportunity to see some of the unusual anemones found around the island, including the policeman anemone Mesacmaea mitchellii, worm anemone Edwardsia claparedii and trumpet anemone Aiptasia mutabilis. The cost of the 3 day workshop is £115 which includes a course pack, one classroom day and two days hardboat diving on MV Obsession, a fast boat operating out of Ilfracombe. Additional costs will be for air and accommodation in Ilfracombe for those who need it. There will be a small number of places for local divers using own boat for diving of £35 for the classroom day only. Those taking part need to be qualified divers with experience of hardboat diving and currents. Copies of the Seasearch Guide to Sea Anemones and Corals of Britain and Ireland will be available at the workshop.
