Learn to Dive

The journey to becoming a BSAC Diver is an exhilarating one. It’s about exploration, learning, and the joy of discovering a hidden world beneath the waves. It’s an investment in yourself and a commitment to safety, knowledge, and camaraderie. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the underwater realm. Take that first step, before you know it you’ll be a certified Ocean Diver and ready to Dive in and discover the beauty that lies beneath the surface.

Embarking on the Exciting Journey to qualify as a BSAC Diver

Diving into the underwater world, exploring its mysteries, and experiencing the serene beauty beneath the surface is a dream shared by many. The ILFSAC club offers a structured and accessible path to turn this dream into reality, with the opportunity to become a qualified Ocean Diver in just three easy steps.

Step 1: The Try Dive (October-November)

The adventure begins with a Try Dive, a chance to take your first breaths underwater in the safe and controlled environment of a warm swimming pool. At a cost of £40, this introductory experience includes pool fees and the use of scuba kit. Most importantly, no prior experience is necessary; all that’s required is the ability to swim and a comfort level in a swimming pool. This initial step is designed to make the experience enjoyable and safe for all participants. It serves as a tantalising taste of what lies ahead, providing a glimpse into the world of underwater exploration.

Step 2: Ocean Diver Pool and Theory Training (January – April)

Once you’ve had a taste of the underwater world and decided to continue your diving journey, the next step is to join the training group for more comprehensive learning.

This stage costs £300 and covers BSAC membership, scuba kit hires, training materials, and pool fees. Before joining the training group, participants are required to complete a Diver self-declaration medical fitness form (BSAC Diving Fitness) or undergo a dive medical (DDRC Plymouth) to ensure they are fit and healthy for diving. During this phase, you will gain a deep understanding of the fundamentals of diving through both theoretical and practical sessions. You will learn how to use scuba kit and, most importantly, how to dive safely in confined waters. Becoming a BSAC member during this stage opens doors to building your diver knowledge and skills in a supportive and encouraging community.

Step 3: Open Water Qualifying Dives (April onwards)

The culmination of your training journey comes with the Open Water Qualifying Dives. These four dives, conducted in the sea with an experienced instructor, are your ticket to becoming a certified Ocean Diver. The cost for this stage is £250, and it includes not only the qualifying dives but also ILFSAC club membership and access to club dives for the season upon qualification. ILFSAC members even enjoy the perk of free air and nitrox fills. This stage is where you put your newfound knowledge and skills to the test in the open water, gaining the confidence to explore the depths independently.

As you progress through these stages, you’ll realise that the journey to becoming a BSAC Ocean Diver is more than just a certification; it’s an enriching experience that fosters a deep connection with the underwater world and a sense of camaraderie with fellow divers. It’s important to note that while scuba equipment is provided for training in the pool, once qualified, you’ll need to invest in your own SCUBA kit. Don’t worry; guidance on what you need will be readily available.

In addition to the core steps, there’s an optional kit hire for those who wish to take their time assembling their own equipment, at an approximate cost of £50 for each diving day, depending on the items hired. This flexibility allows you to tailor your diving experience to your preferences.
